Don't Kill Your Koi With the Wrong Koi Supplies

Koi enthusiasts and owners understand that Koi fish are some of the most colorful and beautiful pond fish, but Koi keeping requires at least a basic knowledge and understanding of fish, gardens and ponds, along with a few fundamentals of Koi supplies.

A fantastic way of giving your garden a tranquil look and feel is to position a fountain or a waterfall in your garden. A fountain, or a waterfall also stirs the water quite naturally in your Koi pond, and is also the easiest way to oxygenate the water. This is very important for Koi keeping and Koi health.

Installing a pond filter, designed to maintain the quality of the water in the pond, is essential. Pond filters remove unwanted pollutants and are one of the key pieces of supplies Koi owners will need. Removing these pollutants will decrease the likelihood of your Koi having health issues. However, the only way a filtration system can process water is by having the water moving. Because of this, Koi fish owners will also need to install a pond pump. Pumps are also extremely vital for the health of the pond itself. Though fountains and waterfalls in the pond facilitate in the water's movement, in terms of Koi supplies, they should not exclusively replace a pond pump. The reason for this is that they are not strong enough to help with the filtration of pond water on their own.

Various other supplies will not be used regularly or even daily. However, they should still be kept on hand and readily available. One example of this would be Dechlorinator. This is used when replenishing your pond water level with tap water. You see, Dechlorinator is essential in eliminating harmful tap water chemicals. Koi pond owners also need to check the pH and Nitrate levels of the water on a weekly basis. Koi supplies kits, that include water testing equipment, are available in any pet supply store. Owners can either test the water themselves or take a sample of the pond water back to the bet store for testing. Another good idea is to keep pond salt or baking soda on hand and readily available. When tests show that the water pH and Nitrate chemical levels are off, pond salt or baking soda can be added to regulate the levels of these chemicals in the water.

Because Koi fish are so vibrant in brilliant colors, they are susceptible to outdoor predators like Herons, kingfishers, foxes, cats, raccoons and badgers. Koi fish owners can help keep their fish safe by combining some simple Koi supplies with a few garden pond design tips. Owners can add depth to their pond. Supplying adequate water depth will prevent Herons from wading in it. Supplies of value also include creating overhangs on the side of their pond. If the overhang is high enough, it will prevent predators from reaching the water at all. In addition, if the Koi pond is set under the shade of a tree, it will aid in blocking the view of the pond from above. Koi pond owners can also purchase a net as part of their Koi supplies, to be placed over the whole of the pond. Koi supplies like a net help to ensure the safety of your Koi. A proper net installed over the pond will also prevent debris like leaves from falling into the water thus causing more stress on your pond filter, not to mention the look of your pond.

Koi eat a variety of foods, but it is important to keep a basic food source on hand and readily available. Koi fish are known for eating out of the hands of their owner's. This is great as it allows Koi owners to offer snacks and treats to their Koi fish.

So, when it comes time and you are setting up your Koi pond and considering the kind of supplies you will need, remember that although Koi fish take a little bit of effort on the part of their owners, Koi are a compelling, magnificent fish well worth the effort in keeping proper Koi supplies.
